Problem

To create a publication that is representative of 11 student experiences at 11 different design firms.

Concept

For the publication, as a whole, we decided on a collection of individual contributions that all varied in style and content to represent our individualized experiences.

Purpose

This publication is produced annually by the design BFA cohort at Western Washington University. It serves as documentation of the cohort’s experiences in our summer term internships requirement of our program, and as a thank you to all of our firms. Historically this publication has taken the form of a traditional book or magazine. In my cohort, we were greatly inspired by the Mohawk Quarterly Issue #15 and decided to emulate that format in our work. It worked well for us because each of us had a unique experience, so it made sense to each contribute a custom piece to our book.

My classmate Chancellor Gardiner and I collaborated on designing the box that contained the entire book. By collecting all of the typefaces that our classmates used in their individual contributions, we designed a box that was representative of the experience of users going through each of our stories.

For my contribution, I spent the summer at Modern Species (affectionately known as Mod), a sustainable brand and packaging studio. I spent a lot of time working on projects for Alter Eco Chocolate, so I decided to recreate the dieline of their chocolate box to contain a mini-book detailing my experience at Mod. I wanted to reflect the character of the studio, bright, fun, and playful with the visual style of my piece. I also wanted to carry forward their mission of sustainability and produced this edition of 50 entirely with paper discarded from former students and optimized the press sheet for the least amount of paper waste.
